For a child unable to walk a wheelchair is crucial for their mobility and independence. It may give them the opportunity to go to nursery or school. In the last two years over 60 children have received a standard wheelchair brought using donations from project supporters. Over half of these children use their wheelchair to go to school.
Over 20 wheelchairs were also collected from the community in 2023, repaired and recycled, and given out to children that they best fit and suit. For a small boy this has meant a chance to self propel, go to nursery and independence.
The workshop carries a stock of spare parts and necessary tools and a welding machine to rebuild and repair most problems. Wheelchairs are in short supply, expensive and need to be imported into Lesotho. If we can repair them and recycle we will.
The workshop's location at Abia High School makes it very accessible for the wheelchair users at both schools to call by and repairs can be quickly attended by the technician before bigger problems develop.
A strap on wooden desk has been developed for wheelchairs so that students who wish can be supplied with one to assist their studies at school.
Wheelchair desks are also used in the community for young people who need additional support in a wheelchair or would like a desk to use at home.
